Sad news about Pooh
Yes, the awfulness continues. We lost little Pooh this past Sunday.

The tiniest and most serious rabbit I have ever met is gone, and I really miss her. She is the third rabbit we have lost in four months, and I am starting to wonder if I am cursed.

Bruce keeps reminding me that we specialise in elderly/hard luck cases and we should expect to have our hearts broken on a regular basis. Well, I'll expect it, but I'll never get used to it.

The worst part about it is that we have no idea what went wrong. When I checked on her sunday morning I noticed she had blood in her urine, and I figured she might have an injury. He genital area looked a bit swollen, and I thought maybe Mark had bitten her. She seemed fine otherwise, but I put her on a hot water bottle and gave her some syringed fluids, just in case.

About an hour later, I noticed that her skin through her fur looked black. She was losing the clotting ability in her blood, and was literally just bleeding to death internally. Finding a rabbit vet here on a Sunday is literally impossible, but we went to the emergency vet anyway. It was a lost cause. Despite a call to Alvin at home the vet was unable to offer much advice.

(And may I just say how lucky I am to have Alvin as our rabbit vet? I love that man. He is the world's most fantastic vet and a great human being, and he is the only person I know who could decipher a vet problem through my hysterical sobbing.)

We took little Pooh home, and sat with her and Mark, who gently groomed her head and seemed confused. Why was Pooh wrapped in towels? Why wouldn't Pooh groom him back?

It was pretty heart breaking, and finally I felt that I didn't want him to see her die. We took her upstairs, and she died about ten minutes later.

Alvin is doing a necropsy on her, and maybe we'll find out what happened.

So now there are three rabbits waiting for me up in the Big Warren in the Sky.

Miss you, Pooh. I doubt I will ever again meet a rabbit with such a serious personality, never mind one who will easily fit in a teacup...

*****************

I have a sweet Bruce story.

We took Pooh's body into Alvin's office yesterday, and in the lobby were three kittens in a big cage. They were trying to find homes for them.

We sat and waited next to the cage for a few minutes. Suddenly Bruce got up, and took a Kleenex from the box on the table. He folded it up into a long wand.

Did you know that a long, wand-y Kleenex is an amazing cat toy? He waved it around in front of them, and they got positively silly.

It was a nice little scene, my big tall Bruce waving around a Kleenex for a bunch of addled kittens. I think he could have been convinced to take one home, but I've decided we have our hands full!
